     One of the saddest accidents occurred in our locality on Friday, May 17th, that we have ever experienced, when Miss Charlotte Bleiler fell from a log across the Klickitat river into the river and was drowned. Her body was found May 29th, below the Leidl bridge on the island where it washed been washed. She is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bleiler, and was one of the 1923 high school graduating class, and a very fine and promising young lady. It seems a tragedy to have her taken from us in the full bloom of her sweet life. It was the last day of school and the high school were enjoying the last picnic together on Derry Creek and had walked to the Klickitat River where the accident occurred. Every man and boy were on the search for the body day and night but it wasn't located until Sunday afternoon by three boys from Centerville. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon and she was laid to rest in the Mt. Adams cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved parents and her four brothers.

IN MEMORY OF CHARLOTTE BLEILER

Dearest Lottie, we will miss her,
Vain regrets will often arise;
And 'tis hard to keep from grieving
That so young, death took its prize.
It's very sad that one so happy
On that day should meet her fate.
'Twas only just two days before
She was a high school graduate.
"Good-bye school, Hello life,"
She composed and spoke that night.
Study days for her were over,
All the future looked so bright.
Chilling waters claimed its victim,
On that happy picnic day.
Friends and school-mates couldn't help her,
As it carried her away.
Search crews hunted for her body,
Watch the restless waters flow;
Two days later someone found her,
Almost thirty miles below.
Good-by Charlotte. She has left us.
We will see her face no more;
But we hope some time to meet her,
In our home beyond the shore.

Julia E. Krall.
