PIONEER RESIDENTS CALLED

MARTIN C. MARTIN

     In the passing of M.C. Martin, the White Salmon district has lost one of its best known residents. Mr. Martin died at the Hood River hospital on September 27th, after an illness of several weeks. Hundreds of friends paid parting tribute on Monday at the funeral held in the White Salmon Congregational church. It took was one of the largest funerals ever held in this city. The church services were in charge of the Mountain View Grange, of which the deceased had been a member. Rev. A.E. Derby, pastor of the church officiated. The Odd Fellows of which he also was a member, had charge of the services at the grave at the Odd Fellows cemetery.
     M.C. Martin was born in Pennsylvania on January 12, 1866. At the age of two years he moved to Germany with his parents living there until he was 18 years of age when he returned to America. After spending some time in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and California, he settled in Tacoma, Wn., and was married to Nettie M. Jones, May 10, 1892. Mr. and Mrs. Martin then took up their residence at Cascade Locks, Oregon, remaining there until 1904 when they moved to their orchard property in the Hood View district, a mile and a half west of White Salmon, which has been their home.
     Mr. Martin joined the Odd Fellows lodge in 1902 at Cascade Locks, Ore., where he filled various chairs of Odd Fellowship. December 29, 1905 he transferred his membership to the White Salmon lodge where he took the Encampment and Cantoon degrees. He received the 25 year jewel April 26, 1929. He was a Past Noble Grand when he joined the White Salmon lodge.
     Mr. and Mrs. Martin united with the Mountain View Grange No. 98 soon after coming to White Salmon and have been faithful members.
     Remaining to mourn his loss are: his widow, two sons - Floyd G. Martin of White Salmon and Elwood C. Martin of Portland, Ore., one daughter, Mrs. Georgia Lusk of Portland, Ore.; and four grandchildren.
     Relatives attending the funeral where Mrs. Martin's brother, Mr. Wesley Jones and wife of Toledo, Wash., a nephew, Lester Jones of Caldwell, Idaho; an aunt, Mrs. J.N. Doane of Portland, Oregon.
