MURRIEL CHRISTINA WEST
Murriel Christina West, a life-long resident of Klickitat
Co. and formerly of Lyle, died Aug. 23 at the Valle Vista Nursing Home in
The Dalles, at the age of 90.
Mrs. West was born June 2, 1895 to Claus and Martha (Murray)
Staack in Panakanic, Ore. She attended schools in the Glenwood valley as
well as business school in Portland, Ore. She married James Elmer West Jan.
30, 1916 in Vancouver, Wash.
The Wests moved to Lyle in 1920. Mrs. West served the
community of Lyle as postmaster from 1940 to 1965, when she retired. She
was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Women's Bowling Conference.
She started bowling at the age of 60 and continued until she was 82. During
that time, she participated on many championship teams and won numerous
trophies.
Mrs. West is survived by her children, Zena Houdesheldt
of Lyle; Keith West of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and Colleen E. Gagnon of Salt Lake
City, Utah; 10 grandchildren; and eight-greatgrandchildren. She was preceded
in death by her son William in 1942, husband James in 1959 and three brothers,
James, Perda and Frank Staack.
Interment was Tuesday morning at Balch Cemetery near
Lyle, with the Rev. Arthur Dickie officiating. Funeral arrangements were
handled by Gardner Funeral Home.

Murriel Christina West, 90, a resident of Lyle, Wash.,
died Friday, aug. 23 at a nursing home in The Dalles.
Mrs. West was born in Glenwood, Wash., June 2, 1895.
Her parensts were Claus and Martha Staack. She had three brothers, James,
Perda and Frank.
She grew up in Glenwood and graduated from business college
in Portland. She married James Elmer West on Jan. 30, 1916 in Vancouver,
Wash. They made their home in Klickitat County and moved to Lyle in
1920.
Mrs. West was a member of the Eastern Star, and Women's
Bowling Conference.
She began bowling at Recreation Lanes in The Dalles at
age 60, and bowled until she was 82. She earned trophies and was on some
championship teams.
She was postmaster in Lyle from 1940 until she retired
in 1965. Her husband died in August 1959.
Survivors include two daughters, Zena Houdesheldt, Lyle,
and Colleen E. Gagnon, Salt Lake City, Utah; a son, J. Keith West, Lake Oswego.
Another son, William, died in 1942. She is survived by 10 grandchildren.
She was the last member of the Staack family.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 11
a.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon, Wash. Memorials may be made
to New Hope Farms in Goldendale, Wash.
