MARY KUHNHAUSEN
Mary Edith Kuhnhausen died Oct. 29, 2006, in Portland,
Ore., at the age of 103.
Mrs. Kuhnhausen was born on Dec. 20, 1902, to Emillie
C. Hylton in Bluefield, W.V. At seven, she and her family came by train to
Portland. She spoke of the trip as a wonderful ride. They were met at the
depot by an aunt and uncle who came with horses and wagons to take them to
the Glenwood Valley.
She married Herbert Kuhnhausen on June 8, 1921. The couple
lived in the Glenwood Valley until the Depression, when they moved to White
Salmon. They first started a dairy and delivered milk. Next, they purchased
a 40-acre ranch where they raised cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens and horses.
In addition, they raised cherries and pears. Eventually, the Kuhnhausens
opened a meat market in White Salmon and were in business for 20 some
years.
Mrs. Kuhnhausen was preceded in death by her husband
Herbert in 1950, daughter Doris in 1979, sisters Mildred, Thelma, Wilma,
Viola and Jeanne, and brothers Wallace and Henry.
She is survived by son Denis; grandchildren Kelly, Kris,
Leslie, Mike and David; and great-grandchildren Kasey, Tara Lynn, Monica
and Michelle.
Memorials may be made to Legacy Emanuel Hospital and
Health Center, 2801 North Gantenbein, Portland, Ore. 97227.
