MARY E. CHILDS
Mary E. Childs was born on Dec. 24, 1911, in Hood River
to Roy and Maude Buell Ramsby. She was raised west of Hood River by her mother
and stepfather, A.C. Ross. She attended Frankton Grade School and Hood River
High School.
In 1929, Mary moved to Washington to live with her father.
She spent some summers in tent camps near the horse logging operations in
the Trout Lake Valley and lived for a time above the Gilmer Valley.
During this time she met Ernie Childs. Mary was riding
the Wyers Stage from White Salmon to Gilmer and Ernie was headed to the Kreps
Ranch in Gilmer. They were married on April 10, 1933, at the Methodist Manse
in Goldendale.
Mary and Ernie made their home on the Childs ranch in
lower Trout Lake Valley. After living in a temporary house, they moved into
their new home in the fall of 1933 and lived the rest of their lives there,
raising their family.
Mary died at home on Aug. 23. She was preceded in death
by her husband, F.E. "Ernie" Childs, who died Nov. 22,1987; and is survived
by her son Frank Childs, her daughters Mary Evans Childs and Judi Childs;
grandchildren Lori Call, Sherry Hallenbeck and Erik Hansen; and six great
grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Aug. 27 at Gardner's Chapel
in White Salmon. The Trout Lake Grange officiated and Eulogies were read
