MADALENA SLOCUM
Mandalena Elizabeth Pankratz Slocum "Manda" died on Sunday Nov. 25, 2007, at her
home in Trout Lake. She was born Nov. 11, 1917, to Jacob and Agnes Newfeld
Pankratz in Alliston, N.D.
She married Osborn E. Slocum Oct. 24, 1936 in Vancouver. They made their
home in Salem, Ore., where they raised their daughters. Mrs. Slocum worked as a
cook in the Oregon State Capital building and then as a dental hygienist for
over 40 years. She lived in Salem until she moved to Trout Lake, to live with
her daughter and family.
Mrs. Slocum recently celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by 28 members
of her family.
She could be found out in her garden lovingly tending her flowers and
vegetables. Her family would then enjoy the fruits of her labor as she would be
in the kitchen preserving the bounty of her garden, baking cookies and making
her famous dinner rolls.
She was a member of the Fruitland Evangelical Church in Fruitland where she
served as a wedding coordinator for several years. She was a member of the Salem
Garden and Woman's Club. She also was a member of the Klickitat County Senior
Council and enjoyed participating with the Pioneer Senior Center. She attended
the Mt. Adams Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Slocum was preceded in death by husband Osborn Slocum, brother Arthur
Pankratz and grandson David Webberley.
She is survived by her daughters Lila Webberley and daughter Bea Shewey;
brother Irving Pankratz; sister Ellen Oppen; nine grandchildren, 17
great-grandchildren, and nine great, great-grandchildren.
Memorials maybe made to the Mt. Adams Presbyterian Church in Trout Lake.
