CAR KILLS ELDERLY WOMAN AT POST OFFICE CROSSWALK

A 66-year-old Goldendale woman was struck and killed by an automobile Friday evening as she was crossing the street in front of the post office at Columbus and "A" streets.
Police said Mrs. Mariam Olson was struck down in or near the cross walk on Columbus Avenue at 5:45 p.m. Friday by a car driven by John O. Robinson, 24.
According to information released by the prosecuting attorney's office, Robinson was traveling north on Columbus Avenue when the accident occurred. Mrs. Olson apparently stepped into Columbus Avenue from the west side and was struck a few feet from the center line on the post office side of the street.
In a signed statement, Robinson estimated his speed at 25 miles per hour. Just before entering the intersection, he said, he glanced down at his speedometer; when he looked up, the woman was in front of his car.
Mrs. Olson, known to have been impaired hearing and eyesight, was wearing thick-lensed glasses and a hearing aid at the time of the accident. Apparently killed instantly by the impact, she was thrown about 60 feet by the blow. She was pronounced dead by a physician 10 minutes later.
Authorities are still investigating the fatality, said to have been the first in Goldendale in many years.
Mrs. Olson was born September 14, 1892, in Oak Point, Wash. She was a resident of Goldendale for17 years.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Phillips Funeral Home with Mr. Lloyd Deal officiating. Interment was at the Centerville Grange cemetery.
