RITES READ FOR MERLE AKERILL
Merle W. Akerill, a resident of Stevenson the past 17
years, died at a Portland hospital Thursday, March 15 at the age of 69. Mr.
Akerill had been ill for several years and had been hospitalized for six
weeks prior to his passing.
He was born in Appleton, Washington May 25, 1914, the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Parley H. Akerill. His mother's maiden name was Annie
Viola May Strutt. The family moved to Glenwood, Washington when Merle was
in his late 'teens.
Merle Akerill and Ruth Margraf were married in Goldendale
April 6, 1935 and would have celebrated their 49th anniversary next month.
They made their home in Glenwood and Mr. Akerill was employed on the railroad
for many years before he purchased a service station in Glenwood in 1947.
They sold the station in 1967 and moved to Stevenson where Mr. Akerill worked
as an auto mechanic for many years, including a period with K & S Motors
in Bingen.
He was a member of the Mt. Adams Elks Lodge 1868.
Mr. Akerill is survived by his wife Ruth, at home in
Stevenson; a son of Robert Akerill of Toledo, Washington; two daughters,
Patricia Arbuckle of Portland and Kathleen Cooper of Stevenson; and a sister
Elizabeth Hettrick of Glenwood. There are 11 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 19 at the Gardner
Chapel in Stevenson. The Mt. Adams Elks Lodge conducted the rites. Interment
followed at the Wind River Memorial Cemetery in Carson.
The Gardner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
