NELLIE SMITH

     Former Glenwood school teacher and business owner, Nellie Smith of Lyle died Friday in White Salmon. She was 68.        Born April 7, 1923 in Idaho to Picola (Castle) and Maurice K. Hathaway, Mrs. Smith moved to Glenwood in 1926, graduating from Glenwood High School. She attended Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore. and later graduated from Central Washington College of Education. She married Walter W. Smith in 1943 in Sunnyside.
     Mrs. Smith taught school in Glenwood, Federal Way, and Klickitat. She was also a florist, and founder of Jean Anne's flower shop in White Salmon.
     A longtime member of the Lyle Methodist Church, Mrs. Smith served as chairman of education for several years. She was a Cub Scout den mother while living in Klickitat. Described as being a mom to all children, Mrs. Smith made it a point to listen to those in need. A homemaker, she frequently invited neighborhood children into her home for cookies and let them dance and play in the house.
     She is survived by her husband, Walter of Lyle, sons, Richard of Anchorage, Alaska, Michael of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Pat Richardson of Vancouver; sister, Catherine Walker of Vancouver; brothers, Kenneth Hathaway of Mexa, George and Ray Hathaway of Glenwood, Maurice Hathaway of Goldendale; eight grandchildren.
     Funeral services were held Tuesday at Gardner Funeral Home, followed by vault interment at Mt. Adams Cemetery in Glenwood. Contributions may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
