SERVICES LAST WEEK FOR OLAF BAKER, 80

     Funeral services were held at White Salmon September 8 for Olaf Baker, who spent 41 of his 80 years in the Appleton-Lyle area. Burial was at Balch cemetery, Lyle.
     Mr. Baker was born July 5, 1884, the eldest of eight children of Julius and Sarah Baker, at Morril, Minn. He was married December 22, 1914 at Lewistown, Mont., to Ethel Grace Pearson, who survives as his widow. After homesteading for nine years in Montana, the Bakers moved west, and settled at Appleton. Mr. Baker started work for the J. Neils Lumber Co. in July, 1923.
     At various times he was also a fire warden sawmill owner and operator, logger and farmer. In 1942 he purchased the Lyle ranch of Charley McNabb.
     Mr. Baker was master of White Salmon Masonic Lodge in 1943. He was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Lyle Methodist Church and past master of Columbia Grange, Lyle.
     Death occurred suddenly Thursday, September 3, at Carrington, N.D., where he and Mrs. Baker were visiting her sister, Mrs. Myrtle Clarke in a nursing home.
     In addition to the widow, he is survived by a son, Carol of Lyle; twin daughters, Fern (Mrs. Harold) Lewis of Bingen and Myrtle (Mrs. Loren) Adkisson, The Dalles; and four grandchildren; also two brothers, Edward O. and Adolph O. Baker, both of Vancouver; and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Downs of Bradenton, Fla., and Mrs. Jenny Foster of Oaks, N.D.          The Rev. Bertie Sawtelle (retired), assisted at Gardner's Chapel. Active pallbearers were Dan Hunsaker, Joe Vezina, Olaf Larsen, Amos Larsen, Steve Wnuk and Palmer Wang. Honorary bearers included Lotus Ewing, Norman Elsner, Garver Castle, Russell Niblock, Ralph Baldwin, Harold Sorensen, Homer James and William McLeod.

OLAF BAKER DIES IN NO. DAKOTA

     Funeral services for Olaf Baker, 80, resident of the Lyle-Appleton area for 41 years, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Gardner's Chapel, White Salmon. Masonic Lodge No. 163 F&AM of White Salmon officiated. The Rev. Bertie Sawtelle, retired, assisted.
     Bearers were: (active) Dan Hunsaker, Joe Vezina, Olaf Larsen, Amos Larsen, Steve Wnuk, Palmer Want: (honorary) Lotus Ewing, Norman Elsner, Garver Castle, Russell Niblock, Ralph Baldwin, Harold Sorensen, Homer James and William McLeod.
     Burial was at Balch Cemetery, Lyle.
