OTTIS SHIELDS

     Ottis Taft "Tex" Shields, a resident of Lyle, died on Sept. 28, 2001, in The Dalles, Ore. He was 87.
     Mr. Shields was born on June 14, 1914, in Perryville, Texas, to Lon and Lula (McAlister) Shields. He was raised in Texas, living there until he joined the United States Army on Dec. 12, 1941. While in the Army, he served in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe and earned the Good Conduct Medal. He was stationed at Fort Lewis for a time and while there was introduced to a woman from Kelso. On Aug. 10, 1945, Mr. Shields married Alta Irene Hewett in Grand Prairie, Texas. Later that year, he was honorably discharged from the military service. The couple lived for a year in Chicago, but then moved to the Columbia River Gorge.
     Mr. Shields worked as a log truck driver, mechanic and an Electrician for WKO lumber mill in Carson. He was a Sundowner. Which is affiliated with the Good Sam Trailer Club. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and hunting.
     He loved his family and was devoted to his wife. His grandkids were particularly special to him.
     Mr. Shields is survived by his wife, Alta, Lyle; daughter Linda Tuell, Mercer Island, sisters Faye Kirk, Grapevine, Texas, and Glenys Bridges, San Antonio, Texas; brother Nolan Shields, Duncanville, Texas; grandchildren Katrina and Jacqueline Tuell and Ryan and Curl Shields, and three great-granchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Roger, brother John and sister Florene.
     A graveside service for Mr. Shields was held on Tuesday. Oct. 2, 2001, at 2 pm. at the Lyle Balch Cemetery.
     Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association in care of Gardner Funeral Home, White Salmon.
