PAUL CARYL

     Paul Eugene Caryl passed away April 20, 2004 at his son's home in Mt. Hood, Oregon at the age of 95.
     Paul was born Oct. 3, 1908, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Isaac B. and Anna (Conklin) Caryl. His family moved around Iowa and Minnesota as share-croppers in his youth. At the age of 19 he drove one of the two cars that brought his family to Oregon, camping along the way. After living in McMinnville, Oregon for a year, his family again moved to Washougal, Washington where he met Lola M. Sweet. They married Nov. 11, 1934, and moved to Trout Lake, Wash., to raise their family.
     In the Trout Lake Valley, he managed two different dairy farms before going to work for the dairy co-op that had a milk processing plant in Hood River, which is currently part of Sheppard's Equipment on State Street. He drove a truck, hauling all the milk, from the valley and he and Lola managed a feed store for the co-op until the mid 1950s. In the meantime, he had purchased small farms for raising alfalfa hay cna combined with that, the Charles Coate Dairy where he and Lola milked up to 40 Holstein cows and finished raising their family.
     Paul loved the farm life and stayed busy his entire life, He always said, "You have to keep moving." After retiring from and selling his farms, he moved to Stevenson, Washington, living there the last 15 years. Preceding him in death were his wife, Lola, on July 2, 1986, brothers Rollin, Robert, and Lloyd Caryl and a sister, Marion Schmid.
     Surviving are brother Richard Caryl of Bow, Washington; children and spouses Edward and Marion Caryl of Beaverton, Oregon; Ann and Larry Ivings of Twisp, Wash.; Lee and Diana Caryl of Mt. Hood, Oregon; and John Caryl of Trout Lake; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
