PHILLIP E. TUTHILL
Phillip Ellison Tuthill, a Lyle-area rancher known for
his love of farming and hard work, died Dec. 9 in Lyle, at the age of 67.
He was born Dec. 25, 1917 to Henry and Ida May (Aylor)
Tuthill at Orchard, Texas. He moved with his family from Texas to Los Angeles,
Calif., when he was four years old. They lived there until he was 13, at
which time they moved to the Wahkiacus-Lyle area.
Mr. Tuthill entered the military services in 1942, during
World War II. He was stationed in England, where he met and married Betty
Leach in 1945. After the war, they returned to Lyle, where they have ranched
the past 40 years. He was a member of the Cattleman's Association, the Lyle
Grange and Washington Wheat Growers. He received the honor of Klickitat Co.
Cattleman of the Year in 1982.
He is survived by his wife Betty, Lyle; children Andy
of Lyle, Gene of Appleton, Janet Johnson of Goldendale, Jennifer Knutson
of Seattle, Linda of Portland, Ore., and Anne Endrews of Albany, Ore.; brothers
and sisters, Bessie Thompson of Olympia , Frank of Lyle, Gladys Hutchinson
of Prineville, Ore., Ida May Goldman of Davenport, Wash., Roberta of Los
Angeles, Elizabeth Myers of Stevenson, Marian Teckenburg of Hood River, and
Richard of Portland; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Dec. 13 at Gardner Funeral
Home in White Salmon, with Rev. Clarence Myers officiating. Interment followed
in the Balch Cemetery near Lyle. Arrangements were made by Gardner Funeral
Home of White Salmon.
