PETER W. PORTNER
Peter W. Portner, a White Salmon resident since 1935,
died April 20 at the age of 70.
Mr. Portner was born Aug. 20, 1914 in Cherokee, Iowa
to Charles F. and Louise H. (Pingeon) Portner. He moved to White Salmon in
1935. During his lifetime, Mr. Portner worked as an independent logger, a
professional wrestler and the millworker.
He is survived by his wife Sally, White Salmon; his children,
Lester of Elma, Wash., and Kathleen Keller of Rainier, Ore.; four grandchildren;
brother Lloyd, White Salmon; sisters Fonfa Engle of Hood River, Violet Shum
of Bingen, Rose Schmidt of Grants Pass, Ore., Adele Mansfield of White Salmon,
Lorraine Robinson of Klickitat, Betty Kessinger of Klickitat, and Lillie
Bringer of Rapid City, S.D.
Funeral services for Mr. Portner were conducted Tuesday
afternoon at Gardner Funeral Home, with Lester Portner and Kathy Keller
officiating. Interment followed at White Salmon.
Mr. Portner was very committed to the public education
system. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Pete Portner Memorial
Scholarship for Teachers, care of Riverview Savings and Loan.
