Sgt. Miles Powell, who was killed in action May 17, was shot down with other
members of the plane crew over Formosa. The plane, “The Green Dragon” took off
from Lingayen airstrip, Luzon, P.I., on a combat mission over Koryu bridge,
Formosa. As the plane approached the target it was hit by enemy ground fire and
flames burst from the bomb bay. There were no survivors and the bodies were not
recovered as a crash occurred on enemy territory.
Sgt. Powell, an engineer-gunner served in the army air
force from December 22, 1941, and had been overseas since January of this year.
In addition to his wife, Ruth, and year-old son of
Hebron, North Dakota, he is survived by three brothers and two sisters and other
relatives. An aunt, Mrs. Timmons lives in Camas, Washington.
He was an orphan boy and while attending grade and high
school in Lyle, Washington, made his home with the late L. H. Lawson and Mrs.
Lawson, who now resides in Portland.
Eugene J. Reilly, Chaplain of the 38th
Bombardment group, under date of May 22, wrote Sergeant Powell's wife in Hebron,
North Dakota, giving her details and extended his sympathy in her loss. In part
he said:
“Sergeant Powell had been with the outfit for some time
and in that time the men felt they knew him quite well. They early recognized
his pleasant good nature and his willingness to carry his full share of the
burden. Each and every one of us feels his loss and know full well the heavy
burden that rests upon your heart today. Please rest assured that your husband
shall have a share in every prayer offered by our man, at all services in our
group.”
