QUENTIN JAMES "JAKE" JAEKEL
Quentin James "Jake" Jaekel, 91, of Centerville, died
April 11, 2001.
He was born Nov. 8, 1909 in Centerville, to James R.
and Ester (Ritzschke) Jaekel. Quentin was born, raised, and lived all but
10 years of his life in the home his grandfather, John Jaekel, built around
1900 on his homestead in Centerville, which he claimed in 1874. Jake attended
school at Centerville and graduated from high school there in 1928. He excelled
in all sports, holding the record for many years in both high and low hurdles.
Jake attended Washington State College and graduated in 1934, majoring in
Animal Science. While there he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.
Following graduation, Jake was employed by the government in the Soil
Conservation Service for seven years before transferring to the Indian Service
for three years. In 1943, he returned home to run the ranch when his father
became ill.
On June 8,1935, Jake married his high school sweetheart,
Mary Miller. In 1954, he and his father were named Klickitat County Cattlemen
of the Year and also placed second in the state competition. He was past
president of Klickitat County Livestock Growers Association and past president
of the Columbia Empire Polled Hereford Breeders. During the Washington State
Centennial Year, 1989, the Jaekel Ranch received special recognition, along
with 14 other Klickitat County farms, all having operations dating back at
least one century. In 1996, Jake was named the Grand Marshall of the Klickitat
County Fair parade. Jake also loved to hunt and fish.
Jake was active with the community. He was the leader
of the Central Klickitat Livestock 4-H Club for 18 years. Jake served on
the fair board for many years and was president for three terms, during which
time the beef barn and the grandstands were built. He was also superintendent
of the beef barns for many years, was on the board of the SCS district, a
55-year member of Centerville Grange, was on the Centerville Cemetery board
and was a member and deacon of the Centerville Church of Christ.
His parents, wife, Mary; infant son; great-granddaughter,
Makaela, and sisters, Evelyn Crow and Edna Tobin, preceded him in death.
Survivors include one sister, Lois Hase, of Portland;
children, Kay Cameron and husband Bruce of Centerville; Shirley Ittershagen
Ziegler and husband, Larry, of Canby, Ore., and Dennis Jaekel and wife Chris,
of Centerville; 10 grandchildren, Kristi Tuttle, Brent Cameron, Brad Cameron,
Wendy Garland, Todd Ittershagen, Matt Jaekel, Scott Fitzgerald, Justin
Fitzgerald, Angie Jaekel and Andy Jaekel; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held April 14 at Erdman Funeral
Home with Pastor Ken Akins officiating with burial at Centerville Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to the charity of donor's choice. Arrangements
are under the care of Erdman Funeral Home.
