Following graduation, Jake was employed by the government in the Soil Conservation Service for seven years before transferring to the Indian Service for three years. In 1943, he returned home to run the ranch when his father became ill.

In 1954, he and his father were named Klickitat County Cattlemen of the Year and also placed second in the state competition. He was past president of Klickitat County Livestock Growers Association and past president of the Columbia Empire Polled Hereford Breeders. During the Washington State Centennial Year, 1989, the Jaekel Ranch received special recognition, along with 14 other Klickitat County farms, all having operations dating back at least one century. In 1996, Jake was named the Grand Marshall of the Klickitat County Fair parade. Jake also loved to hunt and fish.
Jake was active with the community. He was the leader of the Central Klickitat Livestock 4-H Club for 18 years. Jake served on the fair board for many years and was president for three terms, during which time the beef barn and the grandstands were built. He was also superintendent of the beef barns for many years, was on the board of the SCS district, a 55-year member of Centerville Grange, was on the Centerville Cemetery board and was a member and deacon of the Centerville Church of Christ.
His parents, wife, Mary; infant son; great-granddaughter, Makaela, and sisters, Evelyn Crow and Edna Tobin, preceded him in death.
