YOUTH KILLED BY ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF GUN
Roy Chappel, Columbia high school student and son of
Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Chappel of White Salmon, aged 16, was instantly killed
Saturday evening, following a return from a hunting trip, when a 30.30 rifle,
held in the hands of Earl Ackley, was accidentally discharged while unloading
in an adjoining room.
Roy Chappel, and Lee Ackley, the latter, a brother of
Earl's were eating in the dining room when the shell plowed through the wall,
sending splinters into the head of Lee, the bullet entering the left side
of Chappel's face. The splinters severed the templar artery of Lee Ackley.
Last reports were that his condition was not serious. Funeral services were
held Monday at Gardner's Funeral Home at 2 p.m. for Roy Chappel.

survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Chappel, one sister, Doris
Evelyn, and four brothers, Eugene Frances, Kenneth Lee, Maurice Alven and
Walter Gordon.
Fifty students from Columbia high school were excused
from classes to attend the service.
Burial services were held on Wednesday at the I.O.O.F.
Cemetery.
