RUTH ELIZABETH JACKSON
Ruth Elizabeth Pope was born March 6, 1856 at Thomasville,
North Carolina, the daughter of Nancy and Elija H. Pope. Two sisters and
three brothers have preceded her in death.
She was married to James W. Jackson, June 15, 1884. They
came to Klickitat County the following September and spent that winter with
A.J. Stout and family at Spring Creek. The next spring they took up land
in the east Horseshoe Bend district, being one of the real pioneers in that
neighborhood. They made their home there until 1903 when they bought a smaller
farm at Spring Creek.
Due to Mr. Jackson's failing health, they moved to Goldendale
in 1939, where he passed away in April, 1915. Mrs. Jackson continued to live
in this home until December 28, 1950, when she was taken to the Klickitat
Valley Hospital where she passed away January 19 at the age of 94 years,
10 months and 13 days.
She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Roy E. Adams, a son, Earl
B. Jackson, both of Goldendale and a son, Carl W. Jackson of Tranquility,
Calif.; also 3 granddaughters, seven grandsons and 6 great grandchildren.
When a young woman she joined the Baptist Church of High
Point, North Carolina, and was a member of the Baptist Church at Spring Creek.
She was a great lover of flowers and was well known for her yard of old-fashioned
flowers.
Services were held at the Phillips Funeral Home, with
Rev. Walter G. Smith officiating. Due to road conditions, the only grandchildren
from out of town able to attend were Ruth C. Miller, of Olympia and Harvey
Adams of Shelton.
