ROSA LEE SMITH
Rosa Lee Miller was born April 21, 1872, in Haywood county,
N.C. On January 12th, 1890, she was united in marriage to William Benson
Smith. To this union were born eight children. She came west with her family
in 1907, settling in Klickitat county in 1910, taking a homestead in the
Crofton Prairie section which they lived for a number of years. They moved
to Portland, Ore., in 1916, where Mr. Smith passed away. Mrs. Smith then
returned to Goldendale, where she resided until her death.
She was taken to the Hood River hospital June 8th, and
underwent a major operation for what was supposed to be cancer of the stomach.
After being there six weeks she was brought home very little improved. She
gradually grew worse and passed away Sunday evening at 7:10 p.m., June 23rd,
1933, at the age of 61 years, 3 months and 2 days. Her three children were
with her to the end. Five other children are deceased.
Mrs. Smith, a resident of this city for twenty-three
years, was known as a noble and honest woman. Her entire life was spent in
doing kindness for others, always thoughtful, patient and trusting. She will
be greatly missed by her host of friends and neighbors, who extend their
sympathies. The surviving children are Weldon B. Smith, of Grandview, Wash.;
Mrs. Mary J. Hill, of San Francisco, Cal., and Frances Mae Smith, of this
city.
She was a member of Aloha Circle, Neighbors of Woodcraft,
Goldendale Grange No. 49, the Circle honoring her at the services, which
were held at the Chapman Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 25th. Interment
took place at the Spring Creek Cemetery in the family plot, Rev. Hugh P.
Andrews officiating.

In Memory Of My Beloved Mother,
Mrs. Rosa Lee Smith
Oh Mother dear, we mourn for you,
Your kindness to us we'll never forget,
Your constant thoughtfullness for everyone -
The memory of your sweet voice lingers yet,
Through many years you toiled,
With always a thought for another,
With care-worn hands you plodded on -
Was there ever a better mother?
You nursed us all thru' sickness -
Saw five of us pass away -
Grieved for them as we grieve for you.
But now with them you've gone to stay,
Your suffering is over, dear,
You've at last found a rest -
A sweet rest which you justly earned
For you've stood the greatest test,
Your suffering hurt us all -
And God in Heaven saw and could understand,
So the angels in Heaven sent for you
To come to that sacred land.
There we know you are happy with your maker,
You really did not die -
For you have gained eternal life -
You rest in that Happy Home on High.
