WASHINGTON WOMAN PIONEER SUCCUMBS: FUNERAL AT LYLE
Mrs. Ruth Coryell Chamberlain, 86, pioneer resident of
Washington, died last Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.L.
Spitzenberger, 5226 N. Michigan avenue.
Born July 14, 1850, Mrs. Chamberlain, as a small girl
saw her father and five brothers leave for service in the Civil war, from
which her father did not return. She was married in Memphis, Md., in 1872
to Joseph Chamberlain. Ten years later the couple went to San Fransisco by
emigrant train.
They then moved to Goldendale, Wash., where they purchased
the land grant of the then noted author, Fred Balch, and established a homestead
where the family has remained for 42 years. Mr. Chamberlain died in 1902
and for the last 17 years his widow has lived in Portland.
Surviving Mrs. Chamberlain are two sons, Fred of Washougal
and Robert of Lyle, Wash.; six daughters, Mrs. Nettie McCarty of Longview;'
Mrs. Ernest Coryell of Vancouver; Mrs. Neta Winter of Goldendale; Mrs. Minnie
Hood of Palacios, Texas; and Mrs. Emma Austin of Manter, Kas.; 30 grandchildren
and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and interment were at Lyle.

PIONEER LADY OF LYLE DIES IN PORTLAND
LYLE, December 14 -- Mrs. Ruth Chamberlain, mother of
R.H. Chamberlain passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Spitzenberger
in Portland, Sunday, December 14. Funeral services were held at the Community
church at Lyle at 1 p.m. Wednesday with interment in the family plot at Lyle.
Arrangements were made by the Killingsworth Avenue funeral
home Wilson Chambers mortuary. Ruth Coryell was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Daniel Coryell. She was the youngest of twelve children. She had eight children,
30 grandchildren and 23 great grand children.
Ruth Coryell was born July 31, 1850 in Illinois. When
she was about ten or eleven years of age she moved with her parents to Memphis,
Missouri. In November 1871 she was united in marriage to Joseph Chamberlain
of that place where they made their home for eleven years.
In 1872 they came west with an emigrant train by way
of San Francisco, California. There they sold all their ox teams and other
property and continued their trip to Portland where they took the boat to
The Dalles and stayed two days and thence from there took a stage coach to
Centerville where they lived on the Jeff Eshelman farm for one year.
Then they bought the Fred Balch place two miles north
of Lyle where she resided until she went to Portland in 1918 to make her
home with her daughter, Mrs. John Spitzenberger.
Mrs. Chamberlain's husband passed away July 27, 1902.
Besides her friends she leaves to mourn her loss two sons, R.H. Chamberlain
of Lyle and Fred J. Chamberlain of Washougal. Horace and Joseph who passed
away when they were small, six daughters, Mrs. Nettie McCarty of Longview,
Washington, Mrs. Earnest Coryell of Vancouver, Mrs. John Spitzenberger of
Portland, Mrs. Lyle Winters of Goldendale, Mrs. Russel Austin of Yoder, Kansas
and Mrs. Minnie Hood of Texas.
