ROBERT VINCENT MITCHELL
Robert Vincent Mitchell, 84, of Goldendale, died April
27, 2000.
He was born Jan. 25, 1916 in Sioux Falls, S.D. to Thomas
Edward and Anna Katherine Custer Mitchell. The family moved frequently throughout
the mid-west and the East Coast, finally settling in Chicago, where he graduated
from Harrison High School in 1935. In October of that year, he and his brother,
Jack, joined the Civil Conservation Corps and were sent to Oregon to work.
In December of 1935, while visiting his uncle, he met Mary Jane Russell,
whom he married in 1936. After attending Oregon State University, Bob transferred
to the University of Oregon and received the B.S. degree in Education. He
continued at the U of O and received the M.A. degree in English in 1941.
Bob spent most of his working life in the newspaper business
and as a teacher. He served as the editor for the Goldendale Sentinel for
ten years and taught at Goldendale High School for 20 years, retiring in
1980.
Bob resided in Goldendale for more than 45 years, where
he was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, as well as a number
of local and national organizations. His greatest passion in life, after
his family, was golf.
Bob's parents and a brother, John, preceded him in
death.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane; seven children,
Bob Mitchell, Louanne Mitchell Olsen, Jack Mitchell, Kathy Mitchell Playfair,
Francis Mitchell, Donna Mitchell Allen and Judy Mitchell Elvington; 13
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Friday, May 5 at
10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Fr. William Byron officiating.
Rosary services will be on Thursday, May 4 at 7 p.m. at the church. Interment
will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery under the care of Erdman Funeral Home.
