RAY W. JOHNSTON
Ray W. Johnston, 60, of Underwood, died at his home, March 3, 2006. He was born
in Tucson, Ariz., Oct. 23, 1945 to Helen and Raymond Johnston.
He grew up in Phoenix and received his Bachelors and
Masters of Business Education at Arizona State University.
He married his wife Darla, in November 1965. In 1969,
he accepted a teaching job at Forks High School in Washington, where he taught
for three years. Their son, Jay, was born during this time. Two years later they
added their daughter, Shawna.
In August of 1972, Mr. Johnston accepted a teaching job
with Stevenson High School, where he continued to teach for 32 years, retiring
in 2004. Besides teaching, he developed a passion for Youth and Government. He
developed the largest delegation in the state and was instrumental in setting up
other delegations throughout Northwestern Washington. He worked with Y and G for
25 years, during which time he also served on the state board.
While on the staff of SHS he ran the concession stand
at every home game for 32 years, worked with student council, was in charge of
the bookstore, and kept track of the accounts for the school. His passions
included gardening, jewelry making, reading, and his family.
He is survived by his wife, Darla, of Underwood; son
and daughter-in-law, Jay and Laurie Johnston; daughter and son-in-law, Shawna
and Mike Caldwell of Hood River; and five grandchildren; his mother Helen
Roberts and sister Joann Johnson of Tucson, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
A family graveside service was held March 3 at Chris-Zada
Cemetery in Underwood. A memorial service will be held at Stevenson High School
gymnasium, March 12 at 3 p.m.
Donations may be sent to Jill Neyenhouse at Stevenson
High School for a memorial fund in Mr. Johnston's name, to be used for Stevenson
High School's Youth and Government program.

March 3, 2006.
He was born in Tucson, Ariz., on Oct. 23, 1945, to Helen
and Raymond Johnston. He grew up in Phoenix and received his bachelor and

Upon meeting Darla Mace at the Phoenix newspapers, they
fell in love and married on Nov. 23, 1965. In 1969, he accepted a teaching
