SELMA COCHENOUR

     Selma A. Cochenour, a longtime resident of Lyle, died Sunday at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles, at the age of 74.
     Mrs. Cochenour was born July 29, 1909, at the Lost Child Mining Claim near Butte, Mont., to Gustav and Selm Myhr. She moved to the farm out of Lyle in June of 1911 with her parents. She attended grade school at Klickitat Heights and then attended Lyle and Columbia High School in White Salmon. She went to Bellingham Normal, where she received her teaching certificate in 1928. In 1940, she received her bachelor of arts degree from Western Washington University and in 1962 she received her master of arts degree from Oregon State University.
     She taught at many schools in the area, including Happy Home near Centerville, Horseshoe Bend, Appleton, Snowden, Husum, Trout Lake, Lyle, Maryhill, Dallesport and White Salmon. She retired from the White Salmon Valley School District teaching special education. Including substituting, her teaching career spanned over 40 years.
     She was also a correspondent for the White Salmon Enterprise, writing Klickitat Heights News for more than 25 years.      She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the National Audubon Society, a life member of Oregon State University Alumni Association, Washington State Retired Teachers Association, retired member of Washington Education Association, Lyle Women's club, past president and member of the Klickitat County Mental Health Advisory Board and a very active member in senior citizen activities.
     Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Vernon, Lyle; a son, Daniel Cochenour, Silverlake, Wash., and one grandson, Vincent Cochenour, Longview.
     Services were Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon, with the Rev. Thornton Gapen and the Rev. Les Haarstad officiating. Interment was at Balch Cemetery, Lyle.

     Selma A. Cochenour of Lyle, born July 28, 1909 to Gustave and Selma Myhr at the Lost Child mining claim near Butte, Montana, passed away January 22 in the Mid-Columbia Medical Center, The Dalles.
     The family moved to a farm outside Lyle in 1911, and she attended schools at Klickitat Heights, Lyle and White Salmon, then earned her teaching certificate in 1928 from Bellingham Normal School. In 1940 she received a BA from Western Washington College; in 1962 she added her MA, earned from Oregon State University.
     In a career spanning more than 40 years, Mrs. Cochenour taught in schools at Happy Home, Horseshoe Bend, Appleton, Snowden, Husum, Trout Lake, Lyle, Maryhill, Dallesport and White Salmon.
     For many years, she was also an active community news correspondent for the Goldendale Sentinel and The enterprise, White Salmon.
     Mrs. Cochenour was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and the National Audubon Society; a life member of Oregon State University Alumni Association; a member of the Washington State Retired Teachers Association, and a retired member of Washington Education Association; active in the Lyle Womens Club, past president and member of the Klickitat County Mental Health Advisory Board, and very in Senior Citizen activities.
     On Nov. 10, 1940, she and Vernon E. Cochenour were married; the couple had one son. Both survive, Mr. Cochenour at the family home and their son, Daniel M. Cochenour, at Silverlake. A grandson, Vincent D. Cochenour, Longview, also survives.
     Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon, the Revs. Thornton Gapen and Les Haarstad officiating. Interment followed at the Balch Cemetery, Lyle.
     The family suggests memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
