LOSES LEGS, IN ACCIDENT AT LYLE; DIES IN HOSPITAL
Sam Mines, 39, negro transient, had both legs cut off
last Wednesday evening when he jumped or fell from a traveling freight train
at Lyle, Wash. In spite of his injury, he managed to crawl from the tracks
to the depot, where the station agent summoned medical aid.
Dr. W.H. Warner, of White Salmon, rushed the injured
man to the Hood River hospital, where an emergency operation was performed
in an attempt to save his life. Blood poisoning took its toll, however, and
he died early the following morning.
The remains were brought back to White Salmon for burial
as a county charge.
The negro was able to toll the authorities but very little
about himself, giving his name and age, and his address as Hannibal,
Missouri.
A telegram sent by sheriff C. B. House to the police
at Hannibal, elicited the reply that Mines was unknown there. Further inquiries
are being made in the nature of fingerprints submitted to the federal bureau
at Washington, D.C., to the Salem State Police and to Washington and Oregon
penitentiaries in an attempt to identify the man, and locate possible relatives.
