SPENCER BLANCLEY HOGE
Spencer Blanchley Hoge was born at Oak Forest, Green
county, Pa., November 16th, 1851. He grew to manhood in his native state
and at the age of 21 years came west to Ancona, Ill., where, on September
3rd, 1878, he was united in marriage to Leora A. Groome, also of Ancona.
Of this union six children survive to mourn deeply his loss. They are Mrs.
Eudora L. Hilton, Hood River, Ore.; Mrs. Helen L. Clark, Yoncalla, Ore.;
Mrs. Louella P. Johnson, Cottage Grove, Ore.; Mrs. Soflena E. Arp., Nine
Mills Falls, Wash.; Elbert H. Hoge, Goldendale, Wa.; and Gilbert E. Hoge,
Yoncolla, Ore.
He came with his family to Oregon in March, 1903 and
settled at Cottage Grove, where they resided for 17 years upon a farm. The
remaining years of his life were passed at Prosser, Wash., in the Yakima
Valley and at Goldendale, Wash.
He united with the Baptist Church when a young man in
Pennsylvania, and later was affiliated with the M.E. church in Ancona, Illinois.
He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John
W. Clark at Yoncalla, Ore., on Sunday, Sept. 15, 1929, at 11:40 a.m.
He was a man of sterling character, a kind and faithful
husband and a most kind, indulgent and loving father. His life was passed
in devotion and service to his country and family with no thought of self,
or his own ease and we, his children, feel that we have lost a father whom
it would be difficult to follow in a life of unselfish devotion to others.
His wife passed away at Goldendale in 1927.
Funeral services were held from the Chapman chapel Saturday,
September 21st, at 10:30 o'clock, with interment in the Spring Creek cemetery,
Elder S.C. Eshelman of Centerville, officiating.
