PIONEER CROSSED GREAT PLAINS BY HORSE AND WAGON
Services were held at Gardner's funeral home at 2 p.m.
Friday, May 24, for S.I. (Solomon Issac) Stratton, 87, Lyle teacher and farmer
since 1910.
Mr. Stratton was born in Clinton county, Missouri, Nov.
20, 1869 and when 12 years old came west by horse and wagon to Buttercreek,
Oregon with his parents Samuel and Nancy Ann Stratton.
He financed his way through Monmouth College by working
between terms for the railroad at Heppner, Oregon. After his marriage to
Sylvia Jane Veatch in 1893, he continued his education to graduation from
Monmouth in 1897.
Before coming to Lyle he taught in Grant, Moro and Gilliam
counties of Oregon and was Moro County Superintendent in 1903 and '04. After
teaching in the Lyle and Balch schools, Mr. Stratton took up farming -- for
26 years on the ranch now owned by Garver Castle and for 11 years since on
the farm he bought from A.R. McNeal.
For years Mr. Stratton sold his fresh vegetables from
door to door in both town and country throughout the Mt. Adams area. Few
could compete with his green thumb and early crops.
Mr. and Mrs. Stratton celebrated their golden and 60th
wedding anniversaries with appropriate parties at the Lyle Grange which he
joined in 1916. Next July Mr. and Mrs. Stratton would have been married 64
years. He was always active in Lyle's community affairs and took pride in
belonging to the State and Natl. Pomona.
Death came to Mr. Stratton on May 13 at Skyline hospital.
The Rev. Albert Allen of St. Mark's Espiscopal church, Hood River, officiated.
Burial was in Balch cemetery.
He is survived by his widow Sylvia Jane, now residing
at North Bonneville sanitarium; sons Verne V. of Astoria, Kenneth K. of Richland,
and Emile E. of White Salmon; five grandchildren and six grandchildren.
