"Lyle News Notes"
Mr. Kirk passed away last Thursday, funeral services were held Saturday in the Balch cemetery. Mr. Kirk was 82 years old. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and a son and daughter, and a brother and one sister.

Funeral Services Conducted Saturday For Well Known Resident
Stokes Kirk passed away suddenly during the night Wednesday. He was 82 years of age. Burial services were held Saturday with interment in the Lyle cemetery.

SERVICES FOR STOKES KIRK HELD SATURDAY
Prominent Resident Laid to Rest in Lyle Cemetery; Relatives Present
BALCH - (Special to The News) - But Balch community was
saddened Thursday by the death of Stokes Kirk, who had lived here for many
years. At the simple funeral, held Saturday at the cemetery, Rev. Stark of
White Salmon conducted the services. Jeff Kirk, a brother, was present, having
arrived Saturday morning from Ukiah, Oregon. A sister, Mrs. Maggie Bell,
of Soap Lake, was unable to attend the service.
Merle Kirk and wife of Heppner, Oregon and Mr. and Mrs.
Roy Tyler of Berlin, Oregon, also attended the service.
Stokes Kirk was born, January 21, 1854 in Graves county,
Kentucky, and passed away January 23, 1936, at Lyle, at the age of 82 years.
Mr. Kirk came west in 1873 with his parents, who settled
near Eugene, Oregon. In 1880, the family moved to Heppner, where in 1888,
Stokes Kirk met and married Miss Elma Langley. Shortly afterwards they moved
to Hamilton, Montana, at which place they resided eight years. Two children,
Merle and Helen, were born in Montana.
In 1910, Stokes Kirk moved to Lyle where he has since
resided. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elma Kirk; a son, Merle, of Heppner,
Oregon; a daughter, Mrs. Roy Tyler, of Berlin, Oregon; a brother, Jeff Kirk,
of Ukiah, Oregon; and Mrs. Maggie Bell, a sister, of Soap Lake, Washington.
Stokes Kirk will be remembered in the Lyle and Balch
communities as an active, self-reliant man.
