FATAL ACCIDENT - An illegal Mexican alien died and 11 others were injured when this 1975 Ford pickup crashed through a guardrail on U.S. Highway 97 near Maryhill State Park on Sunday. Dead in the crash were Salud M. Castillo of Penjamo, Michsacan, Mexico. Both the driver and one of the front seat passengers fled the crash scene and have not been located. ACCIDENT INVOLVES 14 ALIENS SUNDAY
One man was killed and 11 others injured, two quite
seriously, when a pickup carrying 14 people went over a guardrail and 100-foot
embankment on U.S. Highway 97 Sunday about 2:10 p.m.
Washington State Police reported the dead man is Salud
M. Castillo, Panjamo, Michsacan, Mexico, believed to be an illegal alien
from that country.
The accident occurred only.8 mile north of the
Washington-Oregon state line and saw emergency vehicles from Klickitat Valley
Hospital, Dufur and Moro respond as well as the Washington State Police,
Klickitat County Sheriff's Office and Sherman County Sheriff's office.
The 1975, Ford, ½-ton pickup was Washington-licenses
to Viviano Ramirez of Wapato. The driver and one passenger left the scene
of the accident. Names of the two are not available.
Eleven illegal aliens were in the bed of the pickup,
investigating officer James Gleason, WSP, reports. In addition there were
three people in the cab - including the two who fled the scene.
Transported to Klickitat Valley Hospital were Juan Ochua,
33, head injuries; Emrique Garcia, 19, head and arm lacerations; Arturo Melendez
Negrete, 19, head injuries; Antinio Rodriques, 46, two broken legs; and Salvador
Ortiz; head injuries.
Taken to The Dalles General Hospital were Severo Lopez,
30, head and right arm injuries; Juan Rodriquez, 30, head and right shoulder
injuries; Ignacious Garcia Gomez, head injuries, rib and arm fractures.
Two men suffered from severe depressed skull fractures
were reported; Cristobal Flores Galven taken to Good Samaritan hospital,
Portland, and an unnamed man to a Yakima hospital.
