STANT SAMUEL, "Happy" SURFACE
Stant Samuel Surface, or "Happy" as he was known to his
friends, was born Apr. 15, 1891 in Frankfort, Ind. He died Oct. 20, 1974
at White Salmon. He left his parents' home at an early age and followed the
work of the cotton gins, starting from the south and working north. He traveled
and worked through many states. In 1923 he came to the Glenwood valley. Some
previous experiences working with steam engines gained him a job with the
Glenwood Lumber Co.
On Dec. 22, 1930 Happy and Rosa Ward were married in
Everett. Together they farmed and logged in the Glenwood area. They celebrated
their 25th wedding anniversary there.
In 1958, Vancouver became their home. After residing
there for 10 years, they chose White Salmon for their retirement.
Surface was a member of the Masonic Order for many years.
He was also a member of the Presbyterian Church. He served his community
and friends well, never failing to witness for his Lord both as a minister
and as a Sunday school teacher. Each Sunday morning found him preparing the
church and it seems fitting that he should pass away on a Sunday, Oct. 20,
at the age of 83 years and six months.
He was extremely proud to be a grandfather to Juanita
L. Rolph of Glenwood, to Darold E. Ward of Macon, Ga. and to Sue L. Atkins
of Indiana, as well as to six great grandchildren.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Rosa and one
step-son, Frank E. Ward of The Dalles, Ore.
Funeral services were held Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. at Gardner's
Funeral Home in White Salmon with Rev. Merrill Tucker of Vancouver
officiating.
Active pallbearers were Walter Danielson, Marshall Skaar,
Harold Kuhnhausen, Roger Kkuhnhausen, Earl Kuhnhausen and Donald Kuhnhausen.
Honorary pallbearers were Woodie Kuhnhausen, Osmar Kuhnhausen, Charles
Kuhnhausen, Leonard Rolph, Emmett DeWalt, Ed Shaw, Albin Berglund and Charles
Holly.
