G. CLARENCE, RANCHER OF AREA, PASSES
Former County Commissioner Victim of Heart Attack in His Physician's Office
Friends of Ulysses Grant Clarence, 68, one of the more
prominent ranchers of the Klickitat valley, were stunned Thursday afternoon
to learn of his death which occurred in Goldendale during a shopping and
business trip here from his ranch in the Crofton Prairie district.
Mr. Clarence recently submitted to a major operation
at the St. Elizabeth hospital in Yakima and was recuperating speedily. He
had spent several weeks in Yakima where he could be near the hospital and
his physician for treatment but had returned here to complete his convalescent.
In Goldendale Thursday with Mrs. Clarence, and feeling
as well as he had for many months, he visited with many of his friends here
and aided his wife in the purchase of the groceries for the ranch.
Just before returning to the ranch, Mr. Clarence went
to see his physician and have his side dressed. Following the dressing up
the abdominal scar, he dressed and was in the waiting room of his physician's
office visiting with a friend when he slumped to the floor dead.
Following his sudden passing, however, it was learned
that he was suffering from a cancerous condition as well as severe heart
trouble and that his condition was much worse than he had suspected, though
he felt improved over his condition prior to the operation.
Mr. Clarence was an active member in the Goldendale grange
and had taken much interest in the Alimus Lodge, I.O.O.F., Goldendale.
He had been active in county affairs since his residence
in the county and was one of the better known men throughout the entire area.
