OBITUARY -- VAN. C. SORENSEN
Van C. Sorensen was born at Odder, Denmark, December
18, 1878 and passed away at The Dalles Hospital April 1, 1951. He was 72
years, 3 months, and 13 days of age at the time of his death.
He came with his parents, brothers, and sisters to America
when he was ten years of age and lived in North Carolina for two years. In
1890 he came west with his family to Fisher Hill where they homesteaded.
He was married to Edith A. Clark on June 22, 1904. At
the time of his marriage, he was carrying mail from The Dalles to Lyle and
High Prairie, coming from The Dalles to Lyle by boat and from Lyle to High
Prairie on horseback. He carried mail for four years. In 1906 he moved to
High Prairie where he farmed until 1928. He them moved to Odell, Oregon,
where he remained for two years and then moved back to Lyle where he engaged
in dairy farming for several years. He has resided in Lyle since his retirement
several years ago.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church and at an early
age and later changed his membership to the Methodist Church of which he
has been a member since. He was a member of the Grange for twenty-two years.
He was insurance agent for Columbia Grange No. 87 at the time of his death
and had been for a number of years.
He was a kind and loving husband and father and leaves
many wonderful memories and inspirations from his teachings to his children.
He is survived by his widow, Edith A. Sorensen of Lyle;
four sons, Harold of Dallesport, Vernon of Friend, Kenneth of Lyle, and Glen
of Mill City, Oregon; three daughters, Eunice Omeg of Yakima, Mildred Cooksley
and Elna Humke, both of Portland; five sisters, Mrs. Oscar Mogren, Mrs. Leslie
Boni, and Mrs. Byrd Clark, all of Lyle, Mrs. O.M. Torjussen of Oregon City,
and Mrs. Amelia Jensen of Holsterbto, Denmark; fourteen grandchildren and
one great grandson. Many other relatives and a host of friends will mourn
his passing.
The funeral was held at the Grange Hall in Lyle on Wednesday,
April 4, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Lamb of Longview reading the service.
Honorary pallbearers were: William Morginson, S.R. Beattle, Homer James,
Walter Crane, James Powell, and Forest Hewett. Active pallbearers were: Don
McCoy, Tim Wols, Tim Hansen, William White, Sidney Johnson, and William Brown.
Grange Service was conducted by Grange Master Olaf Baker
in charge. He was laid to rest in the Lyle Cemetery.
The large crown of people who attended the service and
the beautiful floral pieces were a wonderful tribute to his memory and will
always be remembered and appreciated by his loved ones left behind.
