VERNON COCHENOUR

Vernon Earl Cochenour, a longtime resident of Lyle, was born in Campbell, Neb. on April 2, 1919. He died on Oct. 11, 2004, in The Dalles, Ore.
He was the eldest of six boys and two girls born to Dayne and Faye (Potts) Cochenour. The girls died at birth in Nebraska. Vern was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Morris, Harlin and Marlin.
In 1933, Mr. Cochenour moved to North Dalles, which is now known as Dallesport. While there, he worked picking fruit in Mabton, Yakima, The Dalles and Hood River. He worked for a time at the Hood River Hospital and did jackhammer work at the Dallesport Airport. After his marriage to Selma Myhr on Nov. 10, 1940, he went to work on the dock in The Dalles. In December of 1942 they moved to the ranch in Lyle. After that, Mr. Cochenour worked as a logger in various mills and drove logging truck for SD&S Logging Company for a number of years. That whole time he maintained the farm at home.
Mr. Cochenour was very fond of fishing, particularly in the Klickitat River and at Underwood from "The Bench." He never met a stranger and would invite the people he met while fishing up to the ranch to hunt. He personally enjoyed hunting for deer, elk and gray diggers. He learned how to play the guitar and banjo by ear. He began playing these instruments with his father and grandfather in Nebraska. He enjoyed going to dances. Other things he enjoyed were painting, playing cribbage, telling stories, rooting for the Nebraska football team, observing nature, listening to polka music, listening on the scanner and riding his horse, "Pal" which he did in his younger days.
Mr. Cochenour was preceded in death by his wife Selma, who died in January of 1984. On May 5, 1984, he married Edith Marsh Sexton of Lyle. They met each other at Senior Dances. She died on Sept. 12, 1995.
Mr. Cochenour is survived by his son Daniel Cochenour; stepdaughter Judy Thomas of Yakima, stepson Allen Sexton of Dallesport and two brothers Larry and Lester D. Cochenour, both of The Dalles. He is also survived by four nieces, 14 nephews, 13 grandkids, 12 great-grandkids and the Sexton family.
Funeral services for Mr. Cochenour were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon with interment following at Lyle Balch Cemetery in Lyle.
