VENETA DEAN
Veneta Lucille Dean, a lifetime resident of the Glenwood
area, died July 20, 1997, in White Salmon at the age of 66.
Sweeter Dean, as she was known to family and friends,
was born at Camp 7 on Jan. 23, 1931, to Fred and Veneta (Odle) Steinbach.
The family moved to Glenwood in 1939, where she graduated from high school
in 1947. She married Philip Dean on June 19, 1948, and they made their home
in Glenwood. The couple have five children.
Mrs. Dean, who got her nickname from her father, loved
outdoor activities and spent much of her life enjoying the outdoors with
family and friends. Her favorite activities included huckleberry picking,
mushrooming and camping. She was an avid bowler, bowling in local leagues
and traveling to numerous Women's National Bowling tournaments in places
such as Washington, D.C., New York, and Las Vegas. She belonged to several
clubs in the area and was always on hand to help with various fund raising
dinners in Glenwood. She enjoyed trips to Alaska and other areas, but was
a "true homemaker" and she loved her family, friends and home.
Mrs. Dean is survived by her husband, Philip, Glenwood;
sons James and wife Lonnie, Glenwood, John and wife Sandy, Trout Lake, Jerry
and wife Mary, Glenwood, Jaylin and wife Ellen, Klickitat; and daughter Jennifer
and husband Warren Frudd, Spokane; mother Veneta Lawson, Glenwood; sister
Merdie Smith, Bingen; brother Fred Steinbach, Glenwood; 14 grandchildren,
three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded
in death by a brother, George, in 1951, and her father Fred Steinbach Sr.
in 1973.
Services were held July 24 at the Pioneer Memorial Community
Church in Glenwood, followed by graveside services at Mt. Adams Cemetery
in Glenwood.
Memorials may be given to the American Brain Tumor
Association or Glenwood Cemetery District.
Arrangements were handled by Gardner Funeral Home in
White Salmon.
