VIVIAN LOUISE SMITH

     Vivian Louise Smith, 87, a resident of Hood River since 1990, died Friday, Aug. 16, 1996.
     She was born April 24, 1909, in Wahkiacu County, Wash. to Hettie P. (Knifong) and Alexander Strebe.
     Vivian married Claire W. Smith on April 20, 1929, in Yakima, Wash. They lived in the Yakima Valley until World War II and moved to California in 1942. They moved to this area in April 1945, where they operated a restaurant in Husum, Wash., from 1947 to 1953.
     She was active in square dancing for many years and was well known in the Mid-Columbia area for calling and teaching. She was an avid horse back rider and golfer, and was among those who started the Husum Golf Club. In addition, she loved gardening, bowling, playing cards and being a grandmother.
     Survivors include sons Richard and Jerry Smith of Husum; brother Bob Strebe of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; sisters Bette Strebe of Ashland and Velma Sabol of Everett, Wash.; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
     She was preceded in death by her husband, Claire Smith, and daughter, Judi Shum, of Vancouver.
     Memorial Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at 1 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon, Wash. The Rev. Jim MacCormack will officiate. Private committal will be at White Salmon Cemetery.
     Contributions may be given to the charity of choice.
