WILLIAM AUSTIN
William Avery Austin passed away in The Dalles, Oregon
on Sunday, May 16, 2004 at the age of 76. He was born in Lead Hill, Arkansas
on September 11, 1927 to Lula Bell (Gaines) and John W. Austin.
On December 20, 1945, William joined the United States
Army. He completed his service on May 7, 1947.
Mr. Austin settled in Trout Lake, Washington in 1963
and worked for Rogers Construction and SDS Road Construction Crew. In the
mid-seventies he bought his own dump truck, which he ran until his retirement.
In October of 1996, William moved to Pine Grove, Oregon
south of The Dalles. For the past year, he had been living at Mill Creek
Point in The Dalles, where he was treated like a king. The people there made
him very comfortable and happy.
William was an avid horseman. He broke horses, worked
cattle and rode all over Mt. Adams, an area he knew very well. He loved to
play the guitar and particularly enjoyed bluegrass and old country gospel
music. Not many people knew it, but Mr. Austin was an accomplished poet and
songwriter.
Surviving William Austin are his children, Janie Dodge
and Bob Austin, both of Maupin, Oregon, Sue Newton of Rochester, Washington,
Barry Austin of Bandon, Oregon, and Scott Austin of Dufur, Oregon; sister
Dorothy "Dot" Wade of Yellville, Arkansas; fourteen grandchildren and nine
great grandchildren. Preceding Mr. Austin in death are sisters Avo Chappell,
Elsie Sommers and Hazel Young; brothers Leonard and Lester Austin; son William
Kenneth Austin, who died in the Viet Nam War; daughter Vickie McGinnis, who
died in April of 2000; and his wife Monnie, who died in July of 1995.
A funeral service for William Austin will be held at
Gardner Funeral Home on Saturday May 22 at 11:00 AM with burial to follow
at the Trout Lake Cemetery. Those wishing to sign the online guestbook or
