WALTER "PETE" BERRY
Walter "Pete" Berry, a Bingen resident, died on May 1,
2002 at the age of 77.
Mr. Berry was born May 12, 1924 in La Grande, Ore. to
Arthur and Della (Wall) Berry. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War
II. After the war he and his wife, Betty (Clough) Berry, moved to Bingen
in 1948 to work with Pete's brother, Leon Berry, at the Mt. Adams Sun, the
local area newspaper. The Mt. Adams Sun was later sold to The Enterprise
and the print shop became Berry Printing. It was purchased by Mr. Berry and
his wife in 1972. The couple operated Berry Printing until 1990 when they
retired.
Mr. Berry was of tremendous service to his community
during 54 years of living in the Gorge. He joined the Bingen Fire Department
in 1948 and later served as Fire Chief until retirement. He became an emergency
medical technician (EMT) and volunteer for the Skyline Hospital ambulance
and medical response service. He served on the Bingen School Board, the Bingen
City Council, and was a longtime member of the Lion's Club, a service
organization, for which he was presented the Melvin Jones Fellow for dedicated
humanitarian services. He facilitated vocational learning at Columbia High
School by sharing his printing skills with students, and after retirement
he and his wife were HOSTS (Helping One Student to Succeed) mentors at Henkle
Middle School. And no one knows how many gallons of blood he donated to the
Red Cross over the years!
Mr. Berry was an avid student of history and natural
science. He loved taking his family hiking and camping throughout the American
west. After retirement he and his wife extended their travels to other parts
of the U.S. as well as Canada, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, England, and Scotland.
Mr. Berry is survived by his wife Betty, still living
in their Bingen home they built together; his daughter Kathleen, her husband,
Alan, and their two children, Jascha and Anya, all of Salt Lake City; his
son Michael, Salt Lake City; his daughter Kimberly, Seattle; and his sisters
Ella, Portland, Noreen and Orpha, both of La Grande. He was preceded in death
by his brothers Guy, Leon, Elton, George, and Bob; and by his sisters Leona
and Mabel.
A graveside celebration of Mr. Berry's life will be held
Saturday, May 11, 2002, at 4 p.m. at the White Salmon Cemetery. A potluck
dinner will be held at the Berry residence in Bingen. Guests are asked to
bring their memories and stories of Pete.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Gorge.
Arrangements are being handled by Gardner Funeral Home.
