Tragic Ending At Beach Party Near Rowena

A beach party at Rowena, on the Oregon shore of the Columbia
river, was turned into tragedy Sunday night when Willis Jarvis, 34, of Klickitat,
drowned while attempting to rescue his wife, Lorene, who was in distress.
Others in the party rescued Mrs. Jarvis, after her husband
had gone down. She was unconscious when brought to the shore, but was revived
through artificial respiration.
The party was held on the Frank Jarvis beach. Frank is
a brother of Willis. The body of Willis was recovered and taken to The Dalles.

KLICKITAT MAN DROWNS IN RIVER NEAR THE DALLES
While attempting to save his wife from the waters of
the Columbia river, Willis Jarvis, 34, of Klickitat, was drowned near The
Dalles Sunday evening. According to the Associated Press, Jarvis was swimming
with his wife, Lorene, at Rowena beach on the Columbia.
Mrs. Jarvis was rescued by others along the beach and
revived by artificial respiration. Jarvis' body was recovered.
Jarvis, a native of Lyle, was employed as a lumber
grader in the J. Neils Lumber company plant. He is survived by his widow,
Lorene, several small children; his father, Edwin Jarvis, of Lyle; three
brothers, Frank of Lyle; and Ed and Grant, both of Hood River.

Word was received here Monday morning of the accidental drowning of Mr. Willis Jarvis in the Columbia across from Lyle Sunday night. He with his wife and others were in swimming when the accident happened. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the family. Mr. Jarvis lives in Klickitat.
