WILLIAM COATE, PIONEER, PASSES
William Coate, age 80 years, pioneer Trout Lake Valley
rancher, died on October 6, 1940 at 8:50 a.m. in the Good Samaritan hospital
in Portland.
William Coate was born at Pleasant Hill, Ohio, on December
29, 1860. He was married to Nancy Aurelia Byrkett, on October 14, 1885, at
Pleasant Hill. The Coate's came west to Washington territory in 1887, coming
out with a covered wagon train. They settled in the Trout Lake Valley in
April of 1887 and they resided at their home there until his death.
In 1903 William Coate served as state representative
from this district and also served as county commissioner from the west end
of the county for two terms. He lived in the Trout Lake Valley for fifty
three years.
He is survived by three children; James H. Coate, of
Portland, Ore.; Charles L. Coate, of Trout Lake, and Bessie G. Pearson, of
Trout Lake; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on October 8, 1940, at the
Trout Lake Presbyterian church, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Geo. E. Good officiating.
Interment was in the Trout Lake Cemetery. Arrangements
were in charge of Gardner's Funeral service of White Salmon. White Salmon
Masonic Lodge No. 163 F. and A.M, officiated at the grave. Honorary pallbearers
were Dr. Taggardt, Chas. Pearson, J.E. Reynolds, C.M. Cutting, C.A. Elmer,
Meadon C. Allison and B.C. Hamilton.
Pallbearers were W.R. Lauterbach, Henry Lauterbach,
J.Schmidt, D. Lewis, K. Good, and Carl Pearson.
