SPITZNOGLE RITES HELD SATURDAY
Walter Edgar Spitznogle was born October 6th, 1883 in
Lamonii, Iowa, the son of Ellen and Elwood Spitznogle. He grew up on a farm
in North Platte, Nebraska and as a young man came to Washington to work on
a wheat ranch in the Palouse Country. There he met and married Mollie Travis
and homesteaded at American Falls, Idaho.
The oldest son of Walter and Mollie Spitznogle, Thomas
Eugene Ellwood, was born at Rockland, Idaho on August 1st, 1910 and died
January 20th, 1911. Allie Evelyn Spitznogle was born December 27th, 1911
at Rockland, Idaho and died at Glenwood, Washington on April 18th, 1922.
Oliver Wendell Spitznogle was born on January 1, 1914 at Rockland, Idaho
and died at Hood River on November 1, 1961.
Upon the death of their fist child they moved back to
Iowa, where Walter graduated from Ray's Auto Mechanic School and Anna Ellen
was born in Lamonii. On a visit to Yakima, Walter and his father drove to
Glenwood Valley and on Nov. 18th, 1920 Walter moved his family into Glenwood.
In 1924 Mrs. Spitznogle passed away and Walter raised the children, Oliver,
Anna, and Dean by himself.
He will be remembered for his cheery whistle as he repaired
shoes, saddles, and boots in his little shoe shop by the light of a Coleman
gas lantern when a day in the woods was done or the farm work completed.
Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Norman (Anna) Troh of
Glenwood, Wash., and son, Dean Spitznogle of Salem, Oregon. There are six
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Walter E. Spitznogle were held Saturday,
November 11th, 2 p.m. in the Baptist Church at Glenwood with the Rev. Mr.
Roger White of the Church of Christ in Goldendale officiating, assisted by
Pastor North of Glenwood.
Casket bearers were:
George Andrew, Ivan McCumber, Henry Ladiges, Jr., Albert
Booher, Ray Hathaway, Charles Holly.

W.E. SPITZNOGLE SERVICES SAT. AT GLENWOOD
Funeral services were held Saturday in the Baptist church
at Glenwood for Walter Edgar Spitznogle, 84, of Glenwood, who died in the
Klickitat Valley Hospital in Goldendale on November 9. Rev. Roger White of
the Church of Christ in Goldendale officiated. Burial was in Mt. Adams Cemetery
at Glenwood.
Casket bearers were: George Andrew, Ivan McCumber, Henry
Ladiges, Jr., Albert Booher, Ray Hathaway and Charles Holly.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Norman Troh of Glenwood;
a son, Dean Spitznogle of Salem, Ore., six grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
