WILBUR CART
Wilbur Garret Cart, a former White Salmon resident, died
at his home in Lyle on Monday, at the age of 91.
Mr. Cart was born to Fred and Lenora Cart on Nov. 17,
1896, near New Virginia, Iowa. The Cart family moved to North Dakota in the
early 1900s and settled on a farm near Kenmare. He spent his youth there
and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1918. He and Mildred Jane Irwin were married
in Bowbells, N.D., on April 12, 1925.
Mr. Cart was a blacksmith in Norma, N.D., and an ironworker
on many of the major dams in the West. Mr. and Mrs. Cart retired in White
Salmon in 1965. He served as Commander of World War I veterans and was active
in the American Legion and the Bethel Congregational Church. His hobbies
included rockhounding, fishing and bowling.
Survivors include his wife Mildred, Lyle; daughters to
Kathryn Kerns, Vanadium, N.M., Cleo Sheckels, White Salmon; brothers Walter
J. Cart, Kanmare, N.D.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held today (Thursday) at 1
p.m. at Bethel Congregational Church in White Salmon. The Rev. Arthur Dickie
will officiate. Interment will be at the White Salmon Cemetery. Gardner Funeral
Home is handling the arrangements.
