WILLARD MAN KILLED BY FALLING TIMBER
Wayne Lorett Struck By Snag. Dies Instantly - Funeral Yesterday
Wayne Lorett a resident of Willard, and employed by the
Broughton Lumber Co., which operates a mill at that place, was instantly
killed about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday when a snag falling from a tree, struck him
squarely on the head. This snag, said to have been a large one, was torn
loose by a falling tree. Lorett was working with a Mr. Stanhope, and being
an experienced "faller" believed himself safe as the big tree came down.
The accident occurred about 4 miles north of Willard on a Broughton timber
tract. Only Stanhope was present although several crews were working
nearby.
Coroner R.M. Wright was notified but reached the place
after the body had been released from the tree and taken to Gardner's Funeral
Home in White Salmon.
According to Don Stevenson, manager of the Broughton
Lumber Co., Lorett and Stanhope were falling timber and when a tree came
down, it caught a huge snag hanging from a nearby tree. This fell straight
down, pinioning the victim to the ground. While several men were trying to
release him from the weight, a rock, weighing about 20 pounds, was loosened
from the nearby cliff, hurtling down to strike Lorett fully on the top of
the head. Persons present believed he was dead before the second crash which
fractured his skull.
Mr. Lorett was born Sept. 1, 1894 at Taylorville, Ill.
For 16 years he has lived at Willard, where he has been engaged in the poultry
business, besides being employed by the above mentioned company.
He was a highly esteemed citizen of the county and was
active in the organizations and activities of the community. He was a member
of the White Salmon Lodge, No. 163, F. and A.M., and of the Evergreen Grange,
No. 1076, and was Republican County Precinct Committeeman.
He is survived by his wife, Estelle C. Lorett, two daughters,
Sherry L., of Willard, and Mrs. Thealin Breits, of long Beach, Calif., his
parents and a sister, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Lorett and Gladys Johnson, of Dayton,
Oregon; a brother, Glenn Lorett, and a sister, Mrs. Lucille Barnum, both
of Portland.
Funeral services were held at the Gardner Funeral Home
at White Salmon yesterday with burial at the Underwood Cemetery.
