"A WORTHY CITIZEN CROSSES THE RIVER. - Hon. Wm. D. Smith of Centerville, died
on
Monday last after a long illness, aged 73 years. He had been a
resident of
Klickitat county
for 20 years, and in 1882 represented the county in the then territorial
legislature in a very able and conscientious manner. He had a very large circle
of friends not only in his own neighborhood but throughout the entire
community. Mr. Smith was born in Kentucky but when a young man moved to
Missouri, settling in the county of
Scotland. During his residence there he was elected to the
offices of assessor and sheriff. About the year 1876 he left Missouri for the
Pacific coast,
making a short stop in California and
Oregon until 1879 when he came to this
county. While an active interest in politics was always taken by Mr. Smith, as
a democrat, yet he was never an office seeker. He had been a Master Mason for
51 years and took great interest in the order, and at the grave, near
Centerville, the
Masonic lodge from
Goldendale took charge and read their
impressive burial ritual. The religious services were held at the Christian
church at Centerville, Elder
McIlvaine officiating. The attendance of neighbors and friends
was large, many from Goldendale and nearby places being present. He leaves
behind a wife and a number of children all grown, but whose names we are not
able to learn in full. Among the sons, however, who are all well-known are
John, ex-county assessor, Ludwig, Lee and Dudley." [Note: Ludwig should be
Ludwell. He was my grandfather. Karen DeSanno]
