WALTER W. SMITH
Walter Ward Smith, 72, of Washougal, formerly of Lyle,
died February 10, 1994 at Vancouver, Wash.
He was born in June 28, 1921 in Lyons, Kansas to John
Hiram and Cora Belle (Sutton) Smith. He grew up in Kansas and Colorado, then
moving to the Yakima Valley. He was a veteran of WWII and drove supplies
on Burma Road in China to fighter pilots.
Mr. Smith married Nellie Hathaway March 13, 1943 in
Sunnyside. They eventually settled in Klickitat and Lyle. He worked for St.
Regis for about 15 years and then for Jim Curl for a number of years at the
service station. He was a custodian for Wy'East Junior High in Odell, Ore.
at the time of his retirement in 1989. After retirement he drove a floral
delivery truck for his daughter's flower shop.
Preceding him in death was his wife in 1991. He then
moved to the Vancouver area to be near his family.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Smith of Anchorage,
Alaska and Michael Smith of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Pat Richardson
of Vancouver; a sister, Ruth Snyder of Auburn, Wash.; eight grandchildren
and one great-grandson also survive.
Contributions may be given to the American Lung Association.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 15 at Gardner
Funeral Home in White Salmon with the Rev. JoDene officiating. Committal
was at Mt. Adams Cemetery in Glenwood.
