ZELMA L. NIVA

     Zelma L. Niva, 81, resident of Dallesport, died in The Dalles on March 26, 1995.  
     She was born Feb. 9, 1914 in La Center, Wash. to Albert and Esther Erickson. The family moved to West LInn where she finished high school.
     She worked in the Portland shipyards and as a cook in a lumber camp during World War II. Later she operated a beauty shop and did modeling for department stores in Portland and operated a freight business in the Seattle-Tacoma area for a time.
     She moved to Klickitat County in 1945 and had a business in Goldendale for 16 years. Later she cooked at a local restaurant where she was known for her home made soup.
     She married Ron Niva in Centerville on Sept. 14, 1967. She enjoyed fishing, hunting mushrooms and making trips to Nevada. She was a member of the Moose, Eagles and Emblem Club.
     She is survived by her husband, Ron, Dallesport, two daughters, Donna Miller, Goldendale, and Zell Rae Schutte, Raymond; a son, Dennis Grillo, Yakima; and four step sons, Larry Grillo, Seattle, Kenneth Niva, Winnemucca, Nev.; Jim Niva, of Alaska, and Marc Niva, Goldendale, 15 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
     Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 29 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Erdman Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Howell of the Community Grace Brethren Church officiating. Interment will be in the Centerville Cemetery.

     She was born on February 9, 1914 in LaCenter, Wash. to Alberta and Esther Erickson. The family moved to West Linn, Ore. where Zelma finished high school.
     She worked in the Portland shipyards, and as a cook in the lumber camp during World War II. Later she operated a beauty shop, she modeled for department stores in Portland, and operated a freight business in the Seattle-Tacoma area for a time. She moved to Klickitat County in 1945 and had a business in Goldendale for 16 years, later cooking at a local restaurant where she was known for her homemade soups.
     Zelma married Ron Niva on September 14, 1967 at Centerville.
     She enjoyed fishing, hunting mushrooms and traveling to Nevada. She was a member of the Moose, Eagles and the Emblem clubs.
     She is survived by her husband, Ron Niva of Dallesport; two daughters, Donna Miller of Goldendale and Zell-Rae Schuttie of Raymond, Wash.; one son, Dennis Grillo of Yakima; four step-sons, Larry Grillo of Seattle, Ken Niva of Winnemucca, Nev., Jim Niva of Alaska and Marc Niva of Goldendale; and 15 grandchildren and seven great-grand children also survive.
