PEACE URGED ON INDIANS
Engineers Prepare To Study Old Memaloose Burying Grounds
HOOD RIVER, Or., May 30. - (Special.) - Because of the
known resentment by Indians of the white man's desecration of their mid-Columbia
Memaloose island burying grounds, Richard J. Grace, Portland engineer, who
will soon begin a study of islands in this area, fears possible violence
when he and his staff begin work.
Mr. Grace has written mid-Columbia newspaper friends
urging that they give publicity to the information that his men will not
molest the Indian graves and by personal contact among their aboriginal friends
asked the latter not to shoot when they observe white men swarming over the
island. The Memaloose islands will be submerged to a great extent by the
ship channel which will be created by a Bonneville dam.
