PIONEER MEETING PLEASANT EVENT
September 25, l924
No pioneer meeting has ever been more pleasant than that
of last week, when the families of early day settlers, following a bountiful
dinner at the Asbury Methodist Church, assembled at the library for
reminiscences. Judge Fred W. Wilson, who is beloved by all Hood River pioneers

surviving white man born in Hood River presided. Many pioneers were present
from out of town. The registration of guests as supplied by City Recorder

A treat that was enjoyed by every pioneer was a huge
cake that was baked and presented to them by Mrs. Archie J. McKeown.
The following resolutions on the death of Rev. J.L. Hershner
and Mrs. U.H. Nickelsen were adopted. In the memory of Hood River pioneers
the names of Rev. J.L. Hershner and Mrs. Inga Nickelsen will linger long.
For many years their coming and going was a part of the daily life of the
Hood River community. Mrs. Nickelsen came to Hood River with her husband,
M.H. Nickelsen in the year 1881 and from that time until her last day was
a valued resident here. She was faithful in all the duties of life, a good
mother and a. kind neighbor, thus fulfilling the highest standard of a
pioneer.
To no one could the commendation "Well done, good and
faithful servant, enter into the joys of thy Lord" be more fitly applied
than to our friend and fellow pioneer, Rev. J.L. Hershner. He was truly a
pioneer worker for God. Unselfishly he toiled in the fields for the Master,
and uncomplainingly he bore not only his own burdens but the sorrows of those
to whom he came in their hour of distress and who came to him for spiritual
comfort. He did good wherever he went and truly we can all feel that his
reward will be exceedingly great.
The Hood River Pioneers, therefore, in these resolutions,
record their deep sense of loss in the passing of these loved companions
and tender to their families our sympathy.
We desire to thank the Hood River Co. Library Association
for the use of this hall, the ladies of the M.E. Church for the use of their
kitchen and dishes, the ladies who prepared and served the dinner, the Hood
River Glacier and Hood River News for their appreciative articles and many
other persons who have contributed to our comfort and the success of the
meeting.
