PLANS ADVANCE FOR DEDICATION PICNIC
Initial planning for a locomotive dedication program
and picnic at Maryhill Park were outlined in a meeting held last Wednesday
in Goldendale. At this time, W.J. Crosbie, general passenger agent for the
SP&S Railway, representing N.S. Westergard, vice-president and general
manager of the railroad, met with committee chairman Henry Miller and other
committee members.
September 3 is the date set for the occasion, at which
Ralph Budd, president of the SP&S (and also of the Great Northern), will
hand over title of the last steam locomotive remaining in the hands of a
major railroad in the Northwest, to Klickitat county. This huge engine, No.
2507, will be moved onto a section of track already located at the entrance
to the park, where it will serve as a memorial "to the days of steam locomotive
and to the men who operated them."
Mr. Budd and Mr. Westergard, as well as U.S. Representative
Catherine May who was instrumental in the plan to locate the historic engine
in this county, will have prominent parts in a short program which will precede
a mid-pay picnic in the park.
An excursion train to bring railway fans and other interested
persons from Portland for the occasion, is being planned by the Pacific Northwest
chapter of National Railway Historical Society.
