PROMINENT MEN FORM TOWNSITE AT NORTHDALLES
SECURE 300 ACRES OF LAND
GROUP HEADED BY L.A. DUNCAN; LOCAL PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN THE ENTERPRISE.
Purchase of 300 acres of land in the vicinity of Northdalles,
Washington on the north side of the Columbia River in Klickitat county, marks
the first step toward the development of a townsite and port at that location
by the Northdalles Company, Inc., which was organized at a meeting held in
The Dallas last Wednesday evening. Half of the land is being acquired from
the Curtiss estate and the remainder from the J.T. Rorick estate.
The personnel of the company includes groups from both
The Dalles and Goldendale. The seven incorporators are as follows: L.A. Duncan,
Dr. Thompson Coberth, C.P. Smith, all of The Dalles; and John R. McEwen,
Z.O. Brooks, H.C. Trost and A.T. Byars, all of Goldendale; and Tom Nordby,
of Bingen. Directors elected at the meeting last week are: L.A. Duncan, Dr.
Thompson Coberth, C.P. Smith, E.C. Trost and Z.O. Brooks. Officers will he
elected from the group at a later date.
Forty years ago the Rev. O.D. Taylor, Baptist minister
of The Dalles, established a townsite at the proposed location and sold lots
to easterners. Glass and shoe factories, which later burned, were established,
but the bubble burst. Now, however, the $42,500,000 Bonneville dam under
construction on the Columbia river contains a huge lift lock which will permit
ocean-going vessels to navigate the dam's backwater up-stream as far as the
townsite. The incorporators plan that docks and warehouses will be built
on the waterfront of the new townsite, making it a Columbia river shipping
terminal for the rich Yakima valley.
It is reported that the waterfront property is now under
option to eastern parties who propose the port development.
