RAILWAY YARD TO REMAIN AT WISHRAM SITE
Dike Project Slated To Protect From High Water
Railroad facilities will remain at Wishram, G. F. Ehlen, traffic manager for the
Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway informed The Sentinel this week. Some
speculation had arisen that the yards might be moved farther upstream on the
Columbia, but Ehlen's letter dispelled these reports.
The traffic manager said keeping the facilities at
Wishram "will necessitate a rock protection bank being placed along the river
side of the Wishram yard. In addition it will be necessary to protect the main
line by widening banks and placing rock or riprap protection for a distance of
about 20 miles east of Wishram".
The main line will also be re-located for a distance of
about 14 miles, Mr. Ehlen stated, between a point five miles east of Lyle and a
point just west of Wishram.
It will also be necessary to raise the railway bridge
at Wishram at the northerly end and place towers so that a lift span can be
constructed, he added. Up-river navigation will be extended by the pool behind
The Dalles dam which will cover the turbulent waters at and near Celilo Falls.
Up to now the head of navigation for larger vessels has been at The Dalles, with
only barges proceeding upriver by use of the Celilo Canal.
Work on the relocation project is now in progress. Mr.
Ehlen did not say when the dike protection work along the Wishram yards would
begin. Completion of The Dalles dam will come early in 1960.
