History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
STEPHEN BALDWN AND FAMILY D.M.C. 1864
Coming from Dutch Flat, California to Hood River in l864,
Mr. Baldwin first settled on the tract now known as the "Ordway" place. After
living on it for awhile he traded it for a Henry rifle.
He then formed a partnership with A.H. Tieman and settled
in the Upper Valley, going into the stock business.
They were very successful in that business and, soon
the Baldwin and Tieman Ranch became widely known. It was often called the
"Bachelor Ranch" from the fact that both partners were bachelors, but when
Mr. Baldwin was married to Mrs. Fremont that name was dropped. Mrs. Baldwin
was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.L. Stranahan and a very popular
woman. She had one son which Mr. Baldwin adopted, and another son was born
to them, both children sharing alike a father's love and protection.
Mr. Baldwin died August 2, 1908, at the age of eighty
six years. He had done much to benefit the community, and was greatly esteemed
by all.
